Sustainability and Zero Waste Week - EventCity Receive Silver for Green Tourism

Zero Waste Week (2-6 September) is here and we’re proud to support this award-winning campaign that aims to raise awareness of the environmental impact of waste. Our commitment to sustainability all year round, coupled with our belief that a smarter events venue creates a more sustainable planet, means that we pride ourselves in delivering events in line with our sustainability goals.

In light of our continuing commitment towards sustainability, we’re delighted to announce that we recently received the Silver Award for Green Tourism – an accolade which recognises the commitment of tourism businesses that are actively working to become more sustainable.

Reducing waste for each of our events and on a day-to-day basis is a key element to our business. This is reflected through our achievements in the past year (2018/2019) with 100% of our waste being diverted from landfill and 58% being directly recycled. We’ve also improved our food waste process by using VegWare Compostable Food packaging products across the business, from coffee cups to sandwich wrappers that can be disposed to food waste recycling streams – reducing single-use plastic.

But, that’s not all! Here are seven ways EventCity contributes to Sustainability and Zero Waste Week:

1. We use compostable Vegware products to reduce single-use plastic
2. We’ve been awarded Silver for Green Tourism
3. 100% of our waste has been diverted from landfill
4. 58% of our waste has been directly recycled
5. We’ve reduced our water consumption by over 10%
6. We’ve supported Manchester City of Trees with the Peel Group at Kingsway Park
7. We collect 10 different waste streams across the business - cardboard, metal, aluminium cans, wood, glass, batteries, fluorescent tubes, plastic bottles and general waste.

Andy Roman, our Building Services Manager, highlighted: “Over the past year, our food waste collection and management has been greatly improved, especially in terms of organic food waste that goes to compost along with our disposable Vegware products. We provide waste bins during our events for different materials such as cardboard, metal, aluminium cans, wood, glass, batteries, fluorescent tubes, plastic bottles and general waste to encourage recycling.”

Joanne Holden, our Sustainability Manager, also commented on our achievements in sustainability and waste management, in support of Zero Waste Week: “Sustainability for us means delivering benefits to communities and the environment in everything we do and I’m proud of the way EventCity is embracing this through our waste reduction efforts. Through supporting Zero Waste Week, EventCity is showing all businesses what’s possible and how to become a zero waste to landfill company.”

It doesn’t end there, find out more about EventCity’s sustainability goals, Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) and how we’re working together to create a more sustainable future.
